What Can You Expect at a Session?

The role of the counsellor is not to advise the client about what they should do but more to support them as they make sense of their thoughts, feelings and behaviours which keep them stuck, feeling lost or over anxious.

An initial consultation where you can meet with me and see if you feel that we can work together. Evidence based research shows that one of the most important aspects of success in counselling is the therapeutic relationship. That refers to the relationship between the counsellor (me) and client (you). Do we gel? Can we journey together? Do you feel that you will be understood? The initial meeting offers an opportunity for you to understand exactly what is being offered and answer any questions that you may have.

During therapy sessions. Counselling is often referred to as talk therapy which it primarily is. However, a therapist may use various tools and techniques incorporating painting, drawing, images, creative writing, drama and the like during therapy to support the client. The most important thing to remember is that as a client you always have a say in your therapy and it is important to clearly communicate your needs to your counsellor.

You may consider the following before making a decision about working with me or any other counsellor:

  • Did you feel treated with respect and dignity?
  • Were you explained the process of counselling in a way that made you understood what it was about?
  • Was the difference between short term, medium term and long term counselling made clear?
  • As a general rule counselling sessions are held in the same place, at the same time and each session lasts 50 minutes. Did you come away aware of this? At certain times, adjustments may have to be made but therapy is most effective when worked to a regular framework to keep the momentum going.
  • Were you explained the rules of confidentiality? This means that everything you share with the counsellor remains confidential (undisclosed to any one or any agency outside). There may be exceptions to this rule which hopefully was highlighted to you at the initial meeting.
  • Were you explained the cancellation policy? I request a 24 hour notice period.
