The role of the counsellor is not to advise the client about what they should do but more to support them as they make sense of their thoughts, feelings and behaviours which keep them stuck, feeling lost or over anxious.
An initial consultation where you can meet with me and see if you feel that we can work together. Evidence based research shows that one of the most important aspects of success in counselling is the therapeutic relationship. That refers to the relationship between the counsellor (me) and client (you). Do we gel? Can we journey together? Do you feel that you will be understood? The initial meeting offers an opportunity for you to understand exactly what is being offered and answer any questions that you may have.
During therapy sessions. Counselling is often referred to as talk therapy which it primarily is. However, a therapist may use various tools and techniques incorporating painting, drawing, images, creative writing, drama and the like during therapy to support the client. The most important thing to remember is that as a client you always have a say in your therapy and it is important to clearly communicate your needs to your counsellor.
